ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - A young Atlanta woman went for a jog Wednesday and was struck by a car. The woman wasn't carrying identification at the time, so a resourceful nurse used the woman's iPod to learn her identity.
Sarah Halperin was jogging early Wednesday near Emory when she was struck by a car. Halperin was left unconscious on the side of the road.
The 23-year-old was taken to Atlanta Medical Center's intensive care unit. Hospital staff had no way to identify Halperin.
One of Halperin's nurses, Vivian Abel, said she was determined to learn Halperin identity. With the help of a doctor and Atlanta Medical Center's social services unit , Abel followed the serial number on Halperin's iPod and confirmed a name. From there, Abel was able to track down Halperin's family.
Halperin, who graduated from Emory University, is now a graduate student at the University of Georgia studying social work.
Halperin's family said the 23-year-old loves tutoring underprivileged kids and raising money for various charities.
Halperin was listed in critical condition Friday, but her family was by her side, pulling for her recovery.
Halperin's family said they hope other joggers in areas of high traffic or wilderness areas will take an ID with them, knowing just how easily accidents can happen.
