Zagat.com picks hot breakfast joints for business travelers

Business traveler Barry Maher loves breakfast at the Omelette Inn, which offers a dozen different omelets, in Long Beach.

It has "delicious food, a huge selection, attentive service, friendly people and a funky, yet comfortable, atmosphere," says the professional speaker from Helendale, Calif., who traveled for work about 100 days last year.

The prices also "are amazingly low," compared with a "typical bland hotel breakfast," Maher says.

Plenty of hotels offer tasty breakfasts, and many business travelers find hotel restaurants convenient. But for road warriors like Maher, who wake up a little earlier before the day's first business meeting or who have a little extra time, there's no better way to start a day than at a top-notch breakfast joint.

"It's invigorating to escape the hotel, get my body moving and check out the town a bit, maybe even meet a native or two," Maher says.

Many business travelers, though, often don't know where to go outside their hotels to find special eating spots for what nutritionists say is the most important meal of the day.

At USA TODAY's request, Zagat.com found the best ones for breakfast in 25 cities — ranging from Boston to San Francisco, Minneapolis to Houston — that are frequently visited by business travelers.

"In contrast to the convenience of eating breakfast in your hotel, these restaurants offer great food that's special and an easy introduction to the real local scene," says Tim Zagat, CEO of Zagat Survey, which rates restaurants in guidebooks and on its website.
