Georgia’s First Varsity Women’s Lacrosse Team Ready for First Game

Agnes Scott College’s lacrosse team, the first varsity women’s lacrosse team in Georgia, will take the field for its first regular season game ever on March 2 against LaGrange College.

Agnes Scott was the first Georgia college to establish a varsity women’s lacrosse team, though other Georgia teams (including LaGrange) have followed or are preparing for their first seasons. While there are several club lacrosse teams at other Georgia colleges and universities, Agnes Scott’s team was the first school-sponsored (varsity) women’s lacrosse team.

The game will be held at Agnes Scott’s Gellerstedt Track and Field from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The NCAA Division III team is competing in the USA South Athletic Conference, which includes seven other colleges from Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

“The growth of lacrosse in the state of Georgia is remarkable,” said Agnes Scott lacrosse coach Nikki Williams. “We have doubled the number of high school, middle school and recreational programs in the past five years. The skill level continues to improve as lacrosse is played year round and newcomers are picking up the sticks at younger ages. I believe the sky is the limit for our new team here at Agnes Scott.”

Williams has spent the past five years as the lead coach for two local lacrosse clubs, Dixie Chix Lacrosse Academy and most recently, Hotlanta Lacrosse Company. She has been a member of the Georgia Lacrosse Umpire Board and served as a lacrosse official. She is the current vice president of the Women’s Division of the Georgia Lacrosse Foundation Regional Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse.

The LaGrange matchup is the much anticipated season opener for the team. The Agnes Scott team roster has 18 players and began playing as a team in the fall. The team is a combination of recruited players and players who were currently at Agnes Scott. Williams will continue to recruit from inside as well as outside Georgia.

“The team is very excited about our first game and the upcoming season. We hope that everyone from the community comes out to support us,” Williams said.

Lacrosse is played by 12 players, 11 field players and a goalie. Players may pass, catch or run with the ball in their lacrosse stick. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal. The team scoring the most goals wins.
