AJC Peachtree Road Race to have number exchange system

I like that they reference this as something of a Peachtree tradition, from the ajc.com.

AJC Peachtree Road Race to have number exchange system

For the first time, race numbers for the AJC Peachtree Road Race can now be officially exchanged, though it will come with a cost.

The Atlanta Track Club has introduced a number transfer system in which runners seeking a spot in the race can now run with the number in their name. Runners can transfer their numbers on the track club's Web site for a fee of $20. The deadline is May 20.

The re-sale of race numbers has been something of a Peachtree tradition, as people seeking to get into the race often acquire them from friends, co-workers and through Web sites like eBay and craigslist, sometimes at a premium. The track club has frowned on this exchange, citing concerns over being unable to identify runners who use another person's number and then become incapacitated.

Runners who are unable to participate in this year's race can now also turn in their number for a guaranteed spot in next year's race. There is no fee, but runners will have to pay another entry fee in 2011.
