The running shoe world has been rocked in the last week by spreading news about a British Journal of Sports Medicine article reporting that the conventional wisdom about running shoe prescriptions for runners is, well, far short of confidence inspiring.
That wisdom says that if you match a certain shoe–neutral, stability, or motion-control, as they are often called–with a certain runner type, you can reduce injuries. The authors hypothesized that "runners wearing shoes that are outside their foot category will experience greater pain" than those fitted with shoes according to these long-held beliefs. That is, those who are properly fitted will have fewer injuries.
Their results showed the opposite.
